Extrude faces

All guides

Extrusion extends a face outward or pushes it inward along its perpendicular direction, called the face normal.

  1. Choose Object or Face mode.
  2. Choose the meshy Select tool.
  3. Shift-drag a face to set the distance.
  4. Release to finish one undoable extrusion.

With the dedicated Extrude tool, drag without Shift. A drag just outside a silhouette edge targets the adjacent hidden face. In Face mode, dragging a selected face extrudes the selected faces on that object. Dragging an unselected face extrudes only that face. A click without a drag keeps normal face selection, including Shift-click toggles.

Mode Result
Neighbor Edges Extend existing adjacent faces as the target face moves
Normal Create side walls around the face boundary

Shift-drag with Select remembers the extrusion mode. Its initial mode is Neighbor Edges. During Shift-drag, press Alt to switch modes for this gesture and future Shift extrusions. The dedicated Extrude tool and multiple selected faces always use Normal.

The magnet and grid step snap the distance. An outward drag gives a positive distance. An inward drag gives a negative distance.

Escape cancels the preview. Changes to the tool, component mode, scene, or snap settings also cancel it. For shortcuts that move existing geometry, see Move geometry.
